delicious coffee from the first sip to the last drop

Take that, Starbucks! Be affraid, be very affraid, little mermaid (*)!! Tremble, as coffee-obsessed New Yorkers have many ways to get their cup of joe.

“Our culture runs on coffee and gasoline, the first often tasting like the second." said Edward Abbey (American writer 1927-1989). I tend to agree with that, probably because I am not a coffee lover. I do however enjoy a cup of latte or of "lait russe". As long as there is enough milk to offset the coffee taste, he he...

A Turkish proverb says that “Coffee should be black as Hell, strong as death, and sweet as love”. So I have to ask: a cloud of milk or black? How many sugar cubes? Or maybe just tea?

(*) For those who haven't had their daily cup yet, that's the lady on their logo, Starbucks is the first mate in Moby Dick.

I like my coffee with lots of milk.

I didn't actually start drinking coffee like an addict until just this year, though.

Black, no sugar so you can appreciate the taste and aroma of the coffee. There is nothing as wonderful as the smell of fresh brewed coffee in the morning, except of course for the scent of perfume on a beautiful woman anytime of the day or evening... :)

Your pictures always make me yearn for my home town. Nothing on the street like this out here in STL. Fascinating mini-essay, too.

Our household habit is Starbucks French or Italian roast, brewed strong, right after we wake up. My wife takes just a splash of milk. I like 2 (very large) parts coffee to 1 part hot skim milk, with some Splenda mixed in. Then I am ready for the day's adventures.

While I've never developed a taste for coffee, Mama has a cup every morning. She drinks it black, with a little bit of ice in it to get the temperature just right. I myself love sweet iced tea, although these days I use Splenda and cold brew Lipton's tea. Modern times have so many rewards.

I enjoyed your comment at my blog very much!

Espresso, sometimes with a touch of milk (macchiato) most of the time au lait. Always with sugar.

So that's where Starbucks comes from. That could be a great tidbit for a trivia contest.

•salian: so you only became an adult last year, he,he... My parents used to tell me that the day I stop making faces when I drink coffee and start to enjoy it, I would have grown up. I guess I am not there yet: I still need all the milk I can have in it. ;)
•clueless: he, he, coffee awakens the senses. I'm with you on the aroma: although I don't really like coffee, I cannot resist the smell of freshly ground coffee. Weird, no?
•lessie: see? the stuff we learn with this blog thing!
•moi: lol, thanks for the link. Joan's post made me smile. I was at first surprised by all the different machines she uses. See, Dutch coffee has this reputation of being very weak, like American coffee most of the time. Then I read her "yak" about strong coffee, which is how it is served in Belgium too. Made much more sense, lol.
•strangetastes: I am glad to provide the virtual fashbacks! ;)
•lynette: I do like iced tea once in a while. I always have to ask if it is unsweetened though. I know, I am picky: usually I drink it unsweetened but if I want some sugar, I'd rather do it "my" way. And I do enjoy your comments here very much too!
•fénix: are you one of those people who add 5 packs of sugar? The other day I saw someone do that. I was stunned.
•steve: I had no idea either. We chould write a Trivial Pursuit with things we learned in CDPB only!
•blue: I have never tried. But I like the idea. Although I never buy anything there, I have a soft spot for those street carts.

... nope, doesn't convince me ...

... but indeed it's a funny way to market their coffee!

•sinapse: I am not a coffee drinker, so I can't judge if the coffee is good or not. But I do like those little food carts. They are so emblematic of the city. It gives it some character, in a way. Plus, I do like the idea that "one cup does not fit all". There's coffee for everyone. Starbucks is hardly open when the construction workers start their shift. And if they buy a $5 latte and bring it up there, they are probably going to have their ass kicked for buying such sissy drinks! ;)
