nypd ballet

nypd ballet
From my office overlooking Times Square we can see, at least once a week, a ballet of police cars. All racing together, nicely organized. They congregate to Times Square, then one after the other, they park perpendicular to the street traffic. Once all the cars have filled in a couple of blocks, one by one, they leave in direction of Lower Manhattan.

The other day on my way back home, I caught a similar exercise, on a smaller scale, right in front of the Times Warner Center (a new fancy schmanzy mall at Columbus Circle).

NB: nypd = new york police department

Nice photo and interesting story. Is there any paeticular reason for this exercise?

Your photo captures the "canyon" feel of the city street with all the buldings rising above it.

I think 9/11 is the main reason for those exercises. These are very busy places and very touristy as well.

The picture was taken from my iPhone. I was surprised it looked so good.

"A la queue leu leu
A la queue leu leu
A la queue leu leu
A la queue leu leu
A... A... A... A...

I'm sure the men in blue would balk at this being called a "ballet," but I think it is very, very clever.

Great picture for an iPhone!

Your phone takes much better pictures than mine! I saw a similar ballet in Toronto, a couple of months ago. Weird but also kinda cool.

I saw the same exercise at Union Square recently. It was Sunday and they all lined up at the empty parking lot in front of Barnes & Noble.

Interesting mystery. I can't wait to see if you solve it.

I had to explain in my blog why my posts last week were curt and canned.

Thank you all for your wonderful comments. Did I tell you already that you were my favorite readers?

Trust me on this: when you see this kind of exercise from the 45th floor, it really is a choreography. It looks like they timed it. Andkeropok, it would not surprise me that the car number line up nicely.

This is something I witness every week. It is not a one off or a September exercise. It is really part of their regular practice. I can tell you that it scares some tourists, which in a weird way for us NYers is a bit funny.

I like the composition of the photo!

I guess it must be an emergency exercise.

I think it is important that the fallen are remembered every week...not just once a year. This whole experience knocked us down and it is truly nice to see that they will never be forgotten.

I'm with Blue Wave. . .I love your composition in the photo and I also love the colors and the reflections in the windows. I can't believe you took this with your iPhone. . .That just might cinch the deal for me right there to consider my "need" for one. :^)

... fancy schmanzy mall that smells wonderfully! have you noticed the particular smell inside?

I asked a policewoman what was the purpose of such police cars congregations ... and she explained that they're practising, simply practising, in case there's a catastrophe ...

... that's the US for you! there's always this invisible but almost palpable feeling of threat and insecurity ...
