This chair has been part of the landscape for months now. It stands outside of the 79th street subway station on Broadway. I have never seen anybody sitting on it. But someone must be very fond of it. If you look closely, you will see that it is securely attached to the subway entrance with a padlock.

I think I know why it is there. Someone, probably a guy, takes it on the train every night in order to get a seat:) And brings it back next day on the way into work and chains it back up for that night's commute!

I think it belongs to the homeless community or to a very lazy cop! Did I just write that? Oops!
•clueless: hmmm... I will not hire you as a private detective just yet... ;)
Keep it up!
•fénix: i do confirm: you did just write that. What bugs me is that the chair is broken, hence it must be very uncomfortable. And nobody sits on it. I need to go back at 3am to figure out what's going on... One of those days when I cannot sleep... ;)
Someone obviously treasures this chair ...
That really is too funny. Wonderful that you captured it to share with us all. I'm so curious if anyone really sits in it!
Very interesting. At first I thought someone what thrown away their old chair but like you said, there is a chain securing it to the rail.
You should check back to see if someone sits on it during the day.
Ghost perhaps?

You'd think that this chair would pinch a person so badly that it would have been thrown quickly into the street or down the subway stairs--sort of a reflex action to the pain of the pinch.
Are you doing a scavenger hunt on a regular basis? Just curious.
Thanks for coming by Portland (OR) Daily Photo. I didn't know that about Top Chef--neat!
a curious tale of a curious chair - I'm sitting on the edge of mine but must now go and shut this machine down before I become bug-eyed!
•olivier: le mystère reste entier.
•blue: that's what I thought. But who? And why? I am loosing so much sleep over this enigma. ;)
•waldo: happy to entertain.
•ming: we should take rounds to figure out what's going on with this mysterious chair.
•steve: I think that you might have jut elucidated the mystery!! :)
•lynette: indeed, not comfortable looking at all! Which makes it even more surprising that it is treasured that much.
Ah the scavenger hunts on Flikr... I started in August. So far, I have not succeeding in finishing one entire month. Some of those topics are tough! And most of all, I keep on forgetting what they are...
•hyde: thanks for visiting and commenting. Don't fall from your chair, please! ;)
i've seen this chair before...
