er... happy new year!

Yes folks, the new year's eve ball is currently on display at Macy's Herald Square through December 10th.
Why, you ask? Well, it's a "new" new year's eve ball that will starts its descent from the pole of One Times Square at 11:59 p.m on the 31st of December. A brand new ball to mark the 100th birthday of the new year’s eve ball!
"It was in 1907 that the new year's eve ball made its maiden descent from the flagpole atop One Times Square. This original ball, constructed of iron and wood and adorned with 100 25-watt light bulbs, was 5 feet in diameter." , I learned from timessquarenyc.org. I highly recommend the click if you want to learn all about the new year's eve ball history.

Fascinating story and how different it looks up-close! Something you get used to seeing, you no longer notice its details. :) Thanks for sharing.

Bon samedi !

Interesting colors! It's usually white. It will definitely be interesting to see this red one coming down Time Square this year.

•isadora: right, we take it for granted. This one is a new LCD version. It changes colors: reds, blues, purples, greens,... a whole show.

•keropok: it's quite nice to see it so close. It was smaller than I imagined, and I have the nose on it at work.

•claudine: merci, j'essaie. :) Ah, je la verrai peut-être. Je n'ai pas encore de plans précis pour le nouvel an mais je serai à Bruxelles pour la Noël en famille, youpiiie! D'ici là, il faut faire le stock de photos!

•monika: thanks for your visit! Glad you find the link useful. It is the official site of the Times Square Alliance. You can follow all the events they the TS commerces organize throughout the year.

•ming: you are right, it's a new one. I did not explain this right. The new ball changes colors. I waited for the red, thought it was more festive and better with the other holiday decorations of the store.

•bluechic: well, you are a better shopper than I am! I like the store for what it represents in the New York history, the events they put together but I have to admit that I absolutely hate shopping there. Such mayhem.

•bucefalo: thank you very much. And welcome to my little corner of the web. :)

•fénix: sure! The first year I moved here, I was right there in the crowd waiting for the damn ball to go down. It's something to do once. ;)

•andrew: me neither. It's pretty neat.

•red link: er, gracias! And welcome. :)

la célébre boule du jour de l'an. Je savais pas que l'on pouvait la voir en dehors du jour de l'an lui même. Et puis là on peut la voir sans être totalement écraser par la foule ;o) bonne année

Vivid and pretty designs in all the pictures, what are these made of, the materials?

•olivier: comme toi, j'ignorait. C'est une nouvelle boule pour son centenaire. Et puis ils vendent de petites répliques chez Macy's. Y a toujours du business derrière.

•gwen: I'm really not sure. They say crystal. And there's LCD lighting inside.
