june 2008 theme day: my local corner shop

zabar's
- 2245 Broadway - map it here
Like 174 other City Daily Photo Blogs around the world, I am taking you shopping just around the corner. You can go on a (cheap) international shopping spree by browsing through these 174 posts on the portal here. Enjoy!
Until late yesterday, I was still undecided as to which corner shop to feature. See, the shops at both corners of my street are both New York institutions. On one corner, you have H&H Bagels ("like no other bagels in the world"). And on the other corner, you have Zabar's ("New York is Zabar's... Zabar's is New York").
I chose the later since Saul Zabar, its president and co-owner, is featured in today's New York Times:
A Lifetime Amid the Lox and Rugelach
Almost 80 and Still Zabar's Big Fish, a great audio slide show
Enjoy!

What a lovely store to browse in. It looks fascinating. I have not heard of it, but it would be great to visit.

Everyone loves Zabars. I think I have been there once.

Now that the old Balducci in the Village is gone, Zabars is king. I have been to Zabars a few times and loved it. It's such a New York institution.

The Irish white and black pudding are like boudin noir and boudin blanc but the fillers are oats instead of rice. They are sinfully delicious and eaten only for breakfast (I think).

Great name, and what a fantastic place this looks like. Even has it's own mugs. Lokks like a store you could spend a lot of time in.

I rarely venture up to your neighborhood, but I always try to visit either H&H or Zabar's. Or both! Sadly, most of the old-fashioned appetizing stores are disappearing from Brooklyn. Right now I am longing for a hunk of Zabar's smoked sable fish. Mmmm ... divine!

Oh! My!! Gosh!!! Unbelievable! Your photos make my jaw drop, Eliane. Those stacks and stacks of cheeses behind the counter, and all those kinds of lox. Incredible. I've never been to NYC, but when I come, will you take me here? Woah. Super post and fab photos for our theme day!

Looks interesting! I just love to go inside shops like these. I can be in there for hours, and I have this habit of going aisle to aisle!
