I posted this picture of a doorstep somewhere in SoHo on my Flickr account and got a comment that amused me and which I thought was the perfect commentary for this picture:

Beautiful shot. Lights, graffiti, (or is it art) shoes and all.
It's a regular custom for us to remove our shoes upon entering house.
