flipping through the pages of a beautiful manga

Kinokuniya bookstore www.kinokuniya.com - Avenue of the Americas, across Bryant Park - map it here

Let's travel through the pages of a good manga, Vagabond by Inoue Takehiko, which I discovered thanks to Monika N. She also pointed me to a great Japanese bookstore, Kinokuniya Books, which is located just across from Bryant Park and which is now part of my favorite lunch break destinations. I got lost more than once in the beauty of the origami papers, they have cute tshirts and gifts with an exotic edge. They even have a little coffee shop upstairs and those credit card size subway and NYC maps.

I grew up "reading" the Chinese manga-style cartoons except I don't know how to read or write in Chinese. It did not matter becaue those graphic cartoons are pretty much self-explanatory.

I didn't know there was a Kinokuniya store by Bryant Park. I've only been to the one by Rockefeller Center, btw. 5th & 6th Avenue.

I've never tried Japanese manga (I do want to be able to read the text too), though I love graphic novels. The clothes of the woman in the upper right-hand corner is the one that caught my eye — those folds are so beautifully drawn, you can almost feel the fabric.

I've never heard of the store before, now I really want to check it out! It sounds like a great place, especially if you have some time to kill in midtown. Thanks for the recommendation!

Yay! We're famous!

I'm glad you liked it, Eliane. He seems to be a cool and down to earth dude. One can enjoy his work even when one isn't interested in the story.

Living with a cartoonist, I ma used to these images. They are so distinctive in style. Love the way you've done this shot.
